There are these dragons that live in a valley that's going to be flooded by humans so one of them, Firedrake sets out to find a new home. One of the old dragons said there's a place called the Rim of Heaven where there are more dragons so he tried to find it with his friend Sorell, thats a brownie (not the brown stuff you eat). On there way they meet a lot of different creatures such as a basilisk, a sea serpent, a homoculus, and a boy that tags along with them. A big golden, invincible, dragon eating, "dragon" whos name was Nettlebrand followed them because he wanted something to eat and he expected them to lead him to more dragons at the Rim of Heaven. When they got there they meet another dragon but Nettlebrand followed them so they have to kill him because he wanted to eat them. When they defeat him he turns into a frog. Then they part and the boy lives with these humans and the two dragons set out to bring the rest of the dragons in the valley thats about to be flooded by humans back to the Rim of Heaven that is safer than the valley because no human can find it.
