This book was about a 12-year old genius named Artemis Fowl who, with his bodyguard Butler attempt to steal fairy gold. In the beginning of the book Artemis is visiting a sprite to get a copy of the Book the faries' sacred book which contained rules for their magic powers. After he copies it he figures out that the fairies need to complete the Ritual to get their powers to the maximum. Artemis captures a fairy named Holly Short. Then Holly's commander tries to save her but Artemis as always is two steps ahead. Holly figures out how to get her magic back which is the one thing that Artemis did not anticipate. The fairies also send in something even Butler can't beat up.

I liked the book because Artemis was always 2 steps ahead of the fairies and it's interesting to see what stuff he comes up with like tricking the sprite to let him copy the Book, how he plays mind tricks with Holly so he can get the fairy gold and how he knows how to find the Retreival squad even with thier shields on. Other people might enjoy Butler beating up people or the futuristic stuff Foaly the centaur comes up with.
