THE UNSEEN HELPER~!

Title: THE HORSE and HIS BOY
Author: C.S. LEWIS
ISBN: 0-590-25477-4

This story is set in the world of Narnia during the time that King Peter, Queen Susan, King Edmund and Queen Lucy reigned. Shasta lives in Calormen, but he doesn’t look like the other Calormenes around him. One night, he learns that the fisherman he lives with is not his father and found him in a boat as a baby. He hears the fisherman haggling with a Calormene lord, a Tarkaan, to sell Shasta into slavery. The Tarkaan’s horse surprises Shasta by talking to him and suggesting to run away to Narnia together. The horse, Bree, is a talking horse from Narnia who was taken captive. Shasta and Bree join with other travelers and find the escape to be hard. It dosn’t have any magic in it, since it doesn’t have the magic of anyone being transported to Narnia. However, Aslan himself appears and we see his hand, or his paw shaping events and leading Shasta to his destiny.

To write my opinion of this book, this is an exciting adventure story. I was especially pleased to see the connection between how Aslan the lion guided Shasta’s journey after his loss of family and how God shows his providence to us Christians. I think the story did a good job to illustrate a Christian massage of God’s fatherhood through the character of Aslan. One of the parts in the story that struck me the most is when Shasta and Bree with their companions crossed the river, the unseen roar of the lion from the forest pushed them forward. Sometimes God urges us forward in life through difficult situations. Although we cannot see Him, he is always there helping us move forward. Therefore I would recommend this book to other friends who don’t believe in God because it explains well how God loves us and that we can trust Him.
